Atenas is part of the province of Alajuela, and is located 24 km from the Juan Santamaría Airport.  Its location makes it easy to travel to many destinations, including Guanacaste, San Carlos, and the South Pacific coast.

Atenas is characterized by the gentle climate, its landscape, and the hospitability of its 23,300 inhabitants. The winds that initiate between los Montes del Aguacate (Avacado Mountains) and enter through el Cañón del Río Grande (The Canyon of the Rio Grande) permit a climate recognized for health, rest, and the growing of sugar cane, mangos, and oranges.  Its climate is sub-tropical, one of

the best in the world. It is the sight where geriatric tourism initiated, for the welcoming climate to people of all ages, especially to older adults.  It was previously in the main path of the oxcarts.  A sight of hospitable accommodations for those who are transferring from the Pacific Coast to San Jose to rest.  Witness to the movement of the exportation of coffee and materials that were imported for the construction of important buildings for the development of Costa Rica, like the National Theater and the San Juan de Dios Hospital, and those required for the highway to Limon.  There were commonly about 400 carts per day passing through to rest or to spend the night and see the splendid sunrise and take the new route.  In homage to this tradition, Atenas possesses the National Monument to the Costa Rican Boyero, by the Law of the Republic 6105.

Every year the Catholic church celebrates the Festival of Atenas’s patron saint, Saint Rafael, on the 24th of October.  A cattle auction to the patron saint is customary.  In the month of November is the International Festival of Cuentacuetos, where national and international artists participate and the agroecotourism Fair takes place in Balsa de Atenas (ECAG Campus).  In the summer, on the first Sunday of every month you can find local artists performing in the Sundays in the Park series.  In the month of April, the Climate Expo Fair brings its traditional Sesteo, parade of the oxcarts, crafts, regional culinary delights and cultural and environmental spectacles to the central park. The community parades and horseback rides are an attraction, as well as the area’s sugar cane presses.  Atenas has the charm of a place where people establish weekend houses.
